Hall of lost steps of the new entrance to the Palais de Justice, seen from Harlay, completed in 1868 by Mr. Duc, architect, Theodor Josef Hubert Hoffbauer, between 1875 and 1882

The name of this entranceway - "salle des pas perdus" - could have two meanings in french. Either it is the room of the "un-lost" or the room of "lost footsteps. " the former would signify a remembrance of the dead and the latter would refer refer either to the acoustics of the room, which presumably muffles the sound of footsteps, or the "lost" steps taken around a room while one is waiting. The new palais was designed by the architect mr. Duc and completed in 1868. Date: between 1875 and 1882. Dimensions: 11 x 13 cm. Medium: lithograph. Collection: Brown University Library.
