"a despondent senator" 9"w x 12-1/2"h caricature depicts pennsylvania republican leader simon cameron, three-term u. S. Senator and lincoln's somewhat scandalous secretary of war, on the occasion of his 1877 resignation from the senate (with assurances that the pennsylvania legislature would appoint his son in his stead). In the caricature, his right hand holds a paper saying "hayes' cabinet" and his left has a handkerchief labeled "mrs. Oliver". Caption at bottom says, in quotation marks, "the country's in a dreadful state. ". Date: Published in Puck Magazine: Cover, Vol. 1 No. 2, March 21, 1877.
