iconographic description:
the sculptor jean-pierre dantan is here represented in his workshop making, after the sculptures of habeneck, levasseur, lepeintre jeune, dufresne, musard,… his own statue. Next to him, placed on the ground, a trowel and a plaster tray evoke the edition of the caricatures: we find these symbols on the base of the dantan load carrier kept at the carnavalet museum. Roubaud, who claims to be dantan, plays on the word "time" that dantan himself had represented in the form of a rebus on his charge as a signature for his name. The focus on this disproportionate head is on pimples and cracks; a skullcap covers the top of his head with tousled hair. He wears a long coat with a grid pattern belted at the waist. The mirror he holds in his hand evokes the self-portrait technique of the sculpture he creates. On either side of the stool supporting the work he is sculpting, statues accumulate, as well as on a shelf. “when it comes to life, it is better for the sculptor to have on his workbench the model of a torch, an ash guard, a table, than a band and a statue, because everyone needs that, while the band lover and his money are kept waiting for months on end. » [excerpt from the novel la cousine bette, by honoré de balzac]
historical commentary:
le charivari is a newspaper born in 1832 under the leadership of philipon, in the tradition of the newspaper la caricature. In february 1838, the start of the panthéon charivarique was given: over four years, it was intended to be the counterpart and an inversion of the pediment of the panthéon by david d'angers, whose project was accepted in 1832, and which was completed in 1837. On february 18, 1838, the first incriminating portrait made by benjamin roubaud (1811 – 1847) was published in the charivari. Of the hundred notables of the charivarian pantheon, 47 are indexed in la comédie humaine. Each caricature, characterized by the representation of a disproportionate head, is accompanied by a rhyming caption in the name of the character. Themes / subjects / places represented:
