The Emperor Nintoku, a story from the Chronicles of Japan, Yashima Gakutei, between 1820 and 1825
The young prince nintoku (313-399) and his brother sit near a balcony in the palace. The book the chronicles of japan (nihongi or nihonshoki) was compiled in the 8th century and is one of the earliest histories of japan. The poem refers to the older brother who must ascend the throne, it praises 'the scent of the plum blossom that accepts to open first'.
