Francisco pinto da cunha leal (pedrógão do sul, 22 aug. 1888; lisbon, 26 april 1970) was a military engineer, publicist and politician of the 1st republic who, among other functions, was a member of the portuguese expeditionary corps in the 1st world war, deputy, president of the council of ministers, minister of finance and rector of the university of coimbra. A member of the nationalist party, he founded the união liberal republicana in 1923. Despite having supported the coup of may 28, 1926, he was incompatible with salazar's dictatorship from 1930 onwards, becoming one of the most notable opponents of the first phase of the estado novo regime and one of the first proponents of a political solution of self-determination for the portuguese colonial empire, where he had served. At the end of 1930 he was in funchal, under arrest, taking the opportunity to support and promote the madeira revolt, managing to escape to london in november of that year. Date: 5 June 1927.
