Sparrows among the thorns is an exquisite example of bruno liljefor's painting at its best. The small, refined and intimate sections of nature that originate from the 1880s production are also among the artist's most loved and sought after works. In these boldly cropped compositions, the artist goes extremely close to the motifs, which depict the varied animal life of the upland nature. The composition model bears clear traces of influences from contemporary french painting and, not least, the japanese woodcuts which were "à la mode" during the 1880s, although liljefors himself denied that he had ever studied japanese art. When he renders these wooded slopes, fields and vast meadows of his home region with their teeming wildlife, however, he chooses "steep" perspectives and surprising asymmetric angles, with flowers, blades of grass or, as in the catalog number, the branches of the bird's nest (whose calligraphic rendering is reminiscent of asian art. . ) with the three sparrows in the very foreground. The painting sparrows among thorns is an interesting early work by liljefors that is tangible proof of the deep love that liljefors had for swedish nature throughout his life. Object Type: painting.
