iconographic description:
a bourgeois wearing his overweight figure is welcomed into a simple interior by a maid who hides from him a top hat which she holds behind her back and a pair of boots hidden by a screen. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the morals of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "so, the masked men are jealous husbands who come to spy on their wives, or husbands in good fortune who do not want to be spied on by them, two equally mockable situations. However, the young man was followed, without him knowing it, by a murderous mask, big and short, rolling on itself like a barrel. For all a regular at the opera, this domino betrayed an administrator, a stockbroker, a banker, a notary, any bourgeois in suspicion of his unfaithful person. Indeed, in very high society, no one runs after humiliating testimonies. Themes / subjects / places represented:
