iconographic description:
a man wearing a nightcap is curled up in an armchair. A young woman rearranges the pillows he leans on. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "la rabouilleuse displayed the care of the most servile, of the most attentive tenderness, she found that the gentleman had his head too low, she replaced the pillows, she was like a wife of yesterday. So the old boy had an expansion of sensitivity. -- we owe you, mademoiselle, said agathe, a lot of gratitude for the brands of attachment that you have given to my brother for so long, and for the way in which you ensure his happiness" [extract from la rabouilleuse, by honoré de balzac]
