iconographic description:
genre scene. Exterior scene: paris, "les halles", square, architecture in the background. Characters: a poultry seller behind her stall, protected by a parasol, presents her merchandise to a bourgeois. A fishmonger and an asparagus seller stand nearby and several baskets, filled with goods, are placed in front of them. The man is accompanied by his dog who is holding a bag of vegetables in his mouth. Another merchant, carrying a belly basket, a basket and a bag under her arm approaches. A compact crowd of customers and merchants occupies the rest of the space. Historical commentary:
