Austrians retreating from Milan through Porta Tosa, set on fire, on the night of 22 March 1848, Carlo Bossoli

Five days of milan: the fifth day is mainly occupied by the siege of porta tosa, squeezed between the citizens inside and the peasants outside. Radetzki wants to leave milan from the nearby porta romana but must leave a garrison at the weaker porta tosa to cover his retreat. In fact, the outcome of the battle was mixed, if on the one hand manara burned the portal and briefly conquered it, on the other the austrians managed to recover it and keep it until the end of the night evacuation (helped among other things by the shelling coming from the sforzesco castle). The next day there are no more imperials in milan and the fortifications are in the hands of the population. (excerpt from:[1]. Object Type: painting. Date: XIX secolo. Medium: oil on canvas.
