Gaston laplace designed the interior of reims cathedral on the portal side. During the first days of the first world war, reims cathedral was heavily affected by repeated bombings by the german army. It was completely destroyed by fire on september 19, 1914 following yet another bombardment. In november 1914, gaston laplace went to reims to immortalize the ravages of war in the city through his drawings. He decides to represent the interior of the “martyr cathedral”.
