Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-04-24) letter no. 162 (1943-04-28) next letter (1943-05-02) [we also have other “nice pets” there, like swabians, spiders of every size; the sergeant even saw one] frog hopping through the room, but that can’t bother us. The cat also sneaks into my food bunker and eats some of the margarine; now i’ve locked everything up, it can’t get in anymore. Yesterday i was cooking for the sergeant and my egg dish of 6 eggs was absolutely delicious. I served it beautifully, there were also sandwiches with cheese and honey, followed by a nice liqueur; you can’t live like that back home these days! all in all, i feel "really good" - artillery is firing in the distance - that's all you notice of the war. You see, i'm doing excellently, many comrades envy me. There's no reason to worry at all! how are you now, what are you doing? how did you spend the holidays? what else is new at home? do you have air raid warnings? now that it's getting warm, i'd like you to send me my blue swimming trunks. I thought you'd like to see the pictures, have the other two arrived yet? so, my dear mother, now i've told you everything. Just stay healthy and don't worry, then everything will be fine. Lots of love and kisses from your hansl. Enclosed are two airmail stamps. Date: 28 April 1943.
