La Carriole rouge, Clarence Gagnon, 1924 or 1925

La Carriole rouge, Clarence Gagnon, 1924 or 1925

Our gaze is guided by the winding path starting in the foreground and leading us first to the houses on the right, then branching off to the left leading to the village in the distance. Our eye follows the serpentine line of ice on the river, finally joining the mountains and the horizon. He throws on the stage a diffuse lighting that obliterates the shadows. Combined with the almost flattened treatment of colors, this reduces the impression of depth and tends to simplify the composition. This flattening effect is even more evident in the sketch which served as a model for this canvas. The view is much narrower, because almost all the same elements are found this time painted on a narrower support. "la carriole rouge" and its pochade testify to the evolution of the style of gagnon which, from the late 1920s, will tend more and more to assert itself in the plan assuming more its ornamental character. Object Type: painting. Date: 1924 or 1925. Place of creation: Quebec. Dimensions: height: 51.4 cm (20.2 in); width: 66 cm (25.9 in). Medium: oil on canvas.
