Virgin on the crescent of the moon, Lucas Cranach the Elder

Virgin on the crescent of the moon, Lucas Cranach the Elder

"in the crescent moon madonna, the image type of the standing mary with child is combined with the apocalyptic motif of the 'woman clothed with the sun' (rev 12:1). This is linked to ideas of the immaculate conception, the bodily assumption of mary into heaven and the symbol of the church (mary-ekklesia), which appears particularly in late medieval sculpture. Theology has developed corresponding interpretations of john's vision of the secret revelation since the time of the church fathers. Mary is depicted here with the sceptre and crown of the queen of heaven, surrounded by angels and cherubim. The baby jesus in her arms holds an apple, a symbol of the eradication of original sin, which came into the world through adam and eve. The central positioning and density of meaning represents the 'old' faith in the times of the beginning of the reformation, a popular motif at the time of the counter-reformation after the council of trent, often with a decidedly anti-reformation statement. [. . ] his [albrecht of brandenburg] coat of arms (four-field with three central shields with the coats of arms of the three bishoprics of mainz, halberstadt, magdeburg). In addition to the cardinal insignia, the sword that albrecht received from emperor maximilian i at the diet of augsburg in 1518 on the occasion of his appointment as cardinal is depicted. [. . ] the artist may have used albrecht dürer's engravings as a source of inspiration, in which the motif appears several times. ". Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art.
