Saint bathilde, queen of france, lithograph by jean-antoine laurent based on the painting by the same author entitled bathilde, widow of clovis ii, frees young slaves and presented at the salon of 1814 (number 578 of the booklet) with the following description:
"this queen, who was regent under the minority of her eldest son, clotaire iii, was of great beauty and had a just and delicate mind. She made herself adored by the people and helped by the advice of the profound and political ebroin, mayor of the palace, she governed (said mézeray) with as much kindness, prudence and justice as a good king could have done. Also, for ten years, we saw no disturbance in the states of her son, but this which contributed the most to her glory was the touching action represented in this painting. In bathilde's time, the use of slaves still existed; she had it abolished, and returned to their parents poor children whom they had been forced to sell to satisfy odious exactions which she suppressed forever. Object Type: lithograph. Date: 1826. Bathilde, veuve de Clovis II, rend la liberté à de jeunes esclaves
