Paul Nash After an Advance (1918) Credit-Imperial War Museums, Paul Nash

Correspondence in the imperial war museum between nash and the ministry of information refers to a picture, not otherwise identified, called 'after an advance', which was substantially complete in 1918 (causey/ iwm war artists archive: cat. No. Iwm ww1 267a-6). Image: a view of a western front battlefield in the aftermath of battle, with rain falling from the sky. Four corpses lie amongst shattered trenches, with broken duckboards, barbed wire and corrugated iron littering the scene. There are also water filled shell holes and the remains of a few bare trees on the horizon. Date: 1918 (First World War).
