'caubul [sic], from a burying ground on the mountain ridge, north-east of the city' plate 22 on 7 august 1839 the british-indian army of the indus, under the command of sir john keane, entered kabul. They were accompanied by shah shuja who was duly installed as emir. Atkinson (1780-1852), who accompanied the invasion force as a superintending surgeon, sketched several views of kabul and its buildings during the british occupation.
