In 1811, achim von arnim had epp make a painting for his wife as a gift for her name day. The choice fell on a section of a side wing of joos van cleve's altar from the cologne church of st. Maria im kapitol, which was in the boisserées collection in heidelberg at the time. The original shows saint christina with a millstone, the symbol of her martyrdom. Arnim had the figure isolated in the copy and instead of a millstone a basket of roses and a crown were depicted. The changed attributes transformed the depicted woman into saint elizabeth, according to the patron saint of the recipient. The painting was executed by epp in oil on wood. Arnim reported on the progress of the painting in various letters to clemens brentano and carl von savigny, among others. Arnim's wishes and epp's corresponding execution turned a group portrait into an individual portrait. The change in composition corresponds to arnim's idea of renewing the old through inner participation, as he also claims for poetry and thus for his own work. The painting was in family possession until 2006 and was purchased by a non-profit organization. Date: 1 January 1811.
