Design for façade paintings for the House of the Dance, by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1520

Design for façade paintings for the house of the dance. Pen and ink over preliminary chalk drawing with grey wash, 53. 3 × 36. 8 cm, kunstmuseum basel. This design and that on the reverse of the sheet are significant as the only surviving designs by holbein's hand for façades of the "house of the dance" (haus zum tanz) in basel. Other designs, for example this one, are workshop productions or copies. Holbein's practice was to draw increasingly detailed and finished designs; the loose style of this drawing therefore suggests it comes from early in the design process. The wall paintings themselves no longer exist. Date: circa 1520.
