Title: to the king's most excellent majesty, this view of the royal dock yard at deptford [. . ] view of deptford dockyard, with several ships on the water, and rowing boats going between them, a ship being built to right, with a warehouse on a quay behind, greenwich hospital in the distance. Published state. 1775 etching and engraving inscription content: in lower margin with coat-of-arms in centre and "to the king's most excellent majesty this view of the royal dock yard at deptford/ is by permission and with all humility, inscribed by his majesty's most dutiful subject and servant, rich. Paton", beneath, "size of the picture 4 ft, 10 in. By 3 ft. 4 in. / publish'd by royal authority, & as the law directs london feby. 14th, 1775 / to be had of r. Paton wardour street, soho", beneath lower left corner "painted by r. Paton, the figures by j. Mortimer", in lower right corner "engraved by w. Woollett", and in scratched lettering at bottom left, partly cut off "[prin]ted by j gamble". Original painting by paton rcin reference this is one of five views of royal dockyards (rcin 401526, 401543, 405164, 405165 and 405166) executed by paton with figures by john hamilton mortimer (1740-1779). Horace walpole wrote on 17 february 1775 that paton had showed 'views of the royal dockyards at deptford and chatham' to the king at buckingham house and that the king was pleased to 'express satisfaction at his performance'. This view of deptford docks looks down the river towards the church of st. Alphege and greenwich hospital; a royal yacht is firing a salute and a barge, flying the royal standard, is apparently returning to it. Provenance presumably painted for george iii; first recorded at hampton court in 1842; in the ante room next to the queen's guard chamber at hampton court in 1861 (no 1000) abstract: boats on thames river and dockyard, deptford, london, england.
