four soldiers with animal heads are gathered together. On the right stands a dog-headed officer carrying a cane. On the left, three soldiers with turkey heads equipped with rifles with bayonets, one of whom wears a bandage on his leg, advance towards the officer, dragging their feet. Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (published by gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "there is no more beautiful state than that of a soldier, [. . . ] which is the least pleasing to certain neophytes, when they begin the life of a soldier. Regiment, it’s exercise; they find it monotonous: there are people who have such a bad character!”
