Dish with Lion Hunt, Giovanni Antonio da Brescia

Dish with Lion Hunt, Giovanni Antonio da Brescia

The dramatic subject matter is based on an engraving by giovanni antonio da brescia (1490-1525) reproducing a relief from an ancient roman sarcophagus. Baldassare manara, one of the most prominent maiolica painters of the 16th century, has not just copied the print but has added new character to the scene by placing the figures in a landscape filled with rocks, trees, and strange buildings. To manara's audience, the subject of a lion hunt would have evoked a heroic ancient past. Date: between circa 1520 and circa 1547 (Renaissance). Place of creation: Faenza, Italy. Dimensions: 27.4 cm (10.7 in) (w.). Medium: earthenware. Collection: Walters Art Museum. Baldassare Manara - Dish with Lion Hunt - Walters 481499
