iconographic description:
pl. No. 3 and 4 of the “public sheets” series. See pl. N°1 and 2 (pl. 315-316 of number 151). In the title, play on words between “girls” and “leaves” thanks to a difference in the size of the letters. The newspapers defending the government are then compared to unprepossessing, old and faded prostitutes. On the left, the “gazet […] [gazette] // de // fran […] [france]”, a legitimist newspaper, embodied by a tall, thin old prostitute, wearing a pair of glasses. She holds a crown in her left hand. On his arm stands a young man with a long neck. This is the personification of the “golden youth” (in explanation). He holds a cane whose pommel is the head of chateaubriand, who went to visit the royal family in prague from the beginning of september to the beginning of october 1833. And precisely, behind them, a wooden sign indicating the path to the “road // to prague”. Prague is the city where henry v emigrated with his family in 1832. Pl. Therefore depicts the two characters about to make the pilgrimage to this city. In the center, the newspaper “france // nouvelle”, embodied by a very overweight prostitute. She wears a necklace made of crosses of the legion of honor and a dress with pear motifs. She wears a pear-shaped earring. His apron takes the shape of a copy of a newspaper with the title of the magazine and the lines of an article, illegible. Louis-philippe, who finances this newspaper and supplies it with information, stands facing the prostitute and places his hand under her chin. He gives him a note marked “article // press release”. Seen from behind, he wears a frock coat, a cap and a feather on his ear. Behind them stands out the silhouette of what appears to be the king's shop, likened to a public writer providing articles to the newspaper ("pepin (philippe) // writer // public [public]"). A poster is posted on the side of the stall, bearing the inscription “two // years of // regne [reign]”. Next, the prostitute from the “journal // des // debates”, whose versatility and political opportunism are denounced through the inscriptions on the paper attached to the dress: “long long live the // roâ!! », “live // the // bourbon […] [bourbons]”, “live // l’emp […] [emperor]”. The dress is decorated with a double-headed eagle and the date of establishment of the “[…] estaurat […] [restoration]”: “1815”. His hat bears the tricolor cockade and a medallion decorated with a fleur-de-lys. She gives her arm to a pot-bellied prefect (gisquet?), who puts his hand in her jacket. His frock coat bears honorary distinctions. Behind them, a sofa bearing motifs evocative of the july monarchy: an enema syringe, a magistrate's hat, a pear with a human face, and several other small pears. The armrests are carved with human heads. We can particularly recognize soult. Person / character depicted:
soult, nicolas-jean de dieu; louis-philippe i, king of the french
