iconographic description:
in an italian interior treated with great economy of means, the model that an inscription at the top left of the painting designates under the name of marietta is represented naked, lying down, looking in the direction of the painter. The twisting of its body is reminiscent of ingres' odalisques. Historical commentary:
corot broadened his initial vocation as a landscape painter from the 1860s when women became one of the central themes of his works. For this painting, marietta posed in the studio of achille benouville where corot settled during his third and final stay in rome in 1843.
