historical commentary:
a drawn portrait of jules ziegler corresponding to this engraving, preserved by the musée de la vie romantique, is dated february 11, 1830, during hernani's rehearsals, the general of which will take place on february 24 and premiere on the 25. However, the engraving is not announced by the bibliography of france. Unless we should see it in the enigmatic mention announcing on march 13, 1830, also printed by ratier, “2 plates” by bernard-romain julien when we only know one portrait of this designer on this date: “no. 142 -- victor hugo, 2 plates, by jullien, 8 inches by 8 […]. Imp. De ratier, in paris. In paris, at aubert, véro-dodat gallery. » this double publication can be explained by the success of “hernani” and which draws attention to its author. Furthermore, there are two variants of this engraving, differing in letter, one having the monogram “v h” as the letter, conforming to the original drawing, the other the full name of victor hugo.
