August Boeckh medallion, Reinhold Begas, um 1867

Front: boeckh. Head of august boeckh to the left. Signature r begas engraved on the neck. Comment: one-sided bronze cast. - august boeckh (1785-1867), classical philologist and archaeologist, studied theology and philology, qualified as a professor at heidelberg university and went to berlin in 1809, holding the office of dean and rector of the berlin university founded in 1810 several times. In 1814 he founded the philological seminary and became a full member of the royal prussian academy of sciences. In 1815 he initiated the 'corpus inscriptionum graecarum' (cig). In 1838 his book 'metrological investigations on weights, coin feet and mass of antiquity in their context' was published. In 1842 he received the order pour le mérite for sciences and arts. A copy of this portrait plaque is attached to his tomb in the dorotheenstadt cemetery in berlin. Literature: a. Etzold - w. Türk, der dorotheenstädtische friedhof (1993) 67 (mentioned there).
