Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1944-08-20) letter no. 273 (1944-08-23) next letter (1944-08-28) envelope: front back text blankenburg, august 23, 1944. My dear mum! today i want to send you my heartfelt greetings again and thank you very much for the shoes that arrived yesterday. Thank you very much for the 50 rm too. It's a different story to go for a walk in nice, light shoes again and not be reminded of the army by the sound of nails. I take good care of them and when i can't use them anymore i'll send them back. This time i'm writing during my service; until recently i was working at the telephone exchange. It's quite fun when it's not too bad. Now the replacement has arrived and i'm back in the office. You see, my mother, that's how you learn everything in the army. So i just do what i can. The shift is still long, from 5:00 a. M. To 6:35 p. M. All week and on sundays too. But i'm better off now, because i can sleep until 7:30 a. M. Every three days. It's great, isn't it! i'm back to work now too. The weather here is wonderful for holidays, always blue skies and sunshine, how lovely it would be if i could [be home now]. Date: 23 August 1944.
