The cité industrielle is a hygienic, socially utopian city that was highly influential at important expert gatherings where architects and town planners shared ideas, such as the congrès internationaux d’architecture moderne (ciam, 1928-1959), because of its strict separation of functions. Le corbusier applauded the cité in the periodical l’esprit nouveau (1921) as a prototype for the functional city, where the separation of functions fostered public health.
