Sinking of the Esmeralda with its crew in the Naval Battle of Iquique, Nicolás Guzmán Bustamante, 1882

The naval combat of iquique was a naval confrontation of the pacific war. It took place in the bay of iquique, on wednesday, may 21, 1879. In it, the peruvian monitor huáscar, commanded by captain miguel grau seminario, and the chilean corvette esmeralda, commanded by frigate captain arturo prat chacón, clashed, who was killed in this action. In chile, this confrontation is only considered the naval battle of iquique and resulted in the sinking of the chilean corvette and the lifting of the blockade of the port of iquique. In peru, the confrontation up to punta gruesa is considered to have a single name called the combat of iquique1 2, including the confrontation between the peruvian frigate independencia and the chilean schooner covadonga, which resulted in the independencia running aground on some rocks.
