on august 31, 1790, the marquis de bouillé, governor of the trois-evêchés in metz, launched a punitive operation against the soldiers of the nancy garrison who had rebelled against their officers. The violent fight which took place in front of the guard post at the stainville gate left more than three hundred dead and wounded, including lieutenant désilles who intervened to prevent a fratricidal struggle. This episode aroused strong emotion throughout france and in january 1791, the constituent assembly organized a public subscription for a painting to immortalize the "nancy affair"; it is jean-jacques françois le barbier (1738-1826) who is selected. His painting is reproduced in numerous engravings which largely contributed to the dissemination of this episode. Here, moreover, the publishers did not imitate the composition of prieur, engraved by berthault for the historical tableaux of the french revolution of which the tafereelen van de staatsomwenteling in frankrijk is a dutch version, but that of le barbier the elder, engraved by laurent.
