this harper’s weekly cartoon expresses the opinion that the engine powering the reelection campaign of william howard taft is the promise of federal patronage. The president drives “the great republican machine,” but it is vice president james sherman who goads the republican elephant to move forward. Looking on from behind the political fence are the progressive bull moose and the democratic donkey. Because of a kidney ailment, sherman was actually not able to participate in the republican campaign; he died on october 30, 1912, shortly after this cartoon was published. Following the republican ticket’s loss in the nation election on november 5, the gop’s vice presidential ballots were officially awarded to nicholas murray butler, the president of columbia university.
