Fatal collision at sea between the steam-ships jesmond and lord elgin. Illustration for the illustrated times, 14 may 1870. The earl of elgin steamship was run into by the steamship jesmond ( united kingdom) and sank in the north sea 8 nautical miles (15 km) off huntcliffe foot, yorkshire with the loss of eight of the twenty people on board. Survivors were rescued by jesmond. Earl of elgin was on a voyage from sunderland, county durham to bordeaux, gironde, france. Ss earl of elgin ((1861)), ss jesmond ((1869)). Date: 14 May 1870.
