iconographic description:
jean-jacques rousseau. Genre scene. Illustration of confessions. Two young women, mesdemoiselles graffenried and galley, poor riders, arrive behind jean-jacques rousseau. The passage of the stream. Historical commentary:
lithograph after a painting by roqueplan exhibited at the salon of 1833 under the number 2061 and entitled episode from the life of jean-jacques rousseau. The salon booklet quotes this passage from confessions (vol. 1, book iv, p. 241) which is illustrated by roqueplan: "i hear behind me horses' footsteps, and cries of young girls who seemed embarrassed, but who were nonetheless laughing heartily; i approach, i find two young people of my acquaintance, miss graffendried and miss galley, who, not being excellent riders, do not knew how to force their horses to pass the stream, etc. I took the bridle of miss galley's horse; then pulling him after me, i crossed the stream, having water up to half his leg and the other horse followed without difficulty.
