Child, from On Death, Part I, Opus XI (Kind, Vom Tode, Erster Teil, Opus XI), Max Klinger, 1889

In this, the fifth in klinger’s series on death, part one, death occurs in a seemingly peaceful landscape. In a large meadow bordered by woods, a nanny has fallen asleep upon a bench. Beside her is a baby carriage, beneath which lies fallen bedding. On a path in the distance, toward the darkness of the forest, death leads the child away, dead as a result of its fall. Date: 1889. Place of creation: Germany, late 19th century. Medium: etching print and aquatint. Collection: Cleveland Museum of Art.
