Sidewall, "Corona Vita" [Crown of Life], 1890

Symmetrical design of confronting sphinxes under a tree of life bearing a serpent entwined around its trunk. All this within a cartouche defined by acanthus leaves. Above cartouche, on either side, two peacocks. Below cartouche, two banners: the left one reads "vita", right banner reads: "corona"; printed in pale yellow, beige, light and dark olive, and greens. Date: 1890. Dimensions: 75.5 x 53 cm (29 3/4 x 20 7/8 in.). Medium: block printed on paper. Collection: Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
