Plaque with Susanna Molested by the Elders, Giulio Romano

Plaque with Susanna Molested by the Elders, Giulio Romano

The composition, representing the beautiful, virtuous matron susanna molested by two spying elders while bathing in her private garden, is based on an engraving by the french printmaker rené boyvin (ca. 1525-1610) after the italian painter giulio romano (1499-1546). The plaque has been attributed to pierre courteys, whose monogrammed appears on the "plate with psyche carried into the mountains. " it may be from his workshop, but the use of line and interpretation of form are not up to the quality of those elements in the monogrammed plate. Date: circa 1590 (Renaissance). Place of creation: Limoges, France. Dimensions: height: 25.6 cm (10 in); width: 19 cm (7.4 in). Medium: painted enamel on copper. Collection: Walters Art Museum.
