a rag picker harangues passers-by in the middle of the street, he carries bales of second-hand clothes. Three men, customers or other merchants, try on a coat or come to drop off worn clothes. Illustration of the words of béranger's song "vieux habits! vieux galons" of which here is an extract: as clothing merchants as we are, gentlemen, we observe men: from one end of the world to the other end, clothes do everything. In the changes that occur, the remains belong to us: always on a large scale we calculate. Old clothes! old stripes!"béranger (1780-1857) is a prolific and extremely popular french singer to whom balzac refers in several of his novels. "this worthy gentleman particularly hated priests, he was part of this large herd of simpletons who subscribed to the constitutionnel, and was very concerned about refusals of burials. He adored voltaire, although his preferences were for piron, vadé, collé. Naturally he admired béranger, whom he ingeniously called the high priest of lisette's religion. His daughters, madame camusot and madame protez, his two sons, would, according to a popular expression, have fallen from their heights, if someone had explained to them what their father meant by: singing mother godichon!"
