Saint jadwiga, the so-called silesia (1174-1243) was the daughter of bertolt, duke of meran and agnieszka, margrave of meissen, and from 1191, duchess of silesia, wife of henry the bearded. At her instigation, henry the bearded founded a cistercian monastery in trzebnica, where she often stayed, devoting herself to penance, mortification and caring for the sick and the poor. She was the first princess in poland who gave up her castle for a monastery. She was canonized 24 years after her death. There is a legend associated with her character, praising her as the protector of the poor and sick. The watercolor is an early work of the still teenage jan matejko. The saint, dressed as a prince, distributes food and helps the poor in front of the monastery portal. The painter signed the watercolor in the bottom center: jm rp. 1855.
