"maria clementina francesca (vienna, ca. 1777 - naples, 1801) archduchess of austria, daughter of leopold ii and maria luisa of bourbon - spain, was betrothed to francis i of bourbon (since 1791) whom she married in foggia in 1797. She died in 1801 at just twenty-four years old, after giving birth to a child, ferdinand, who died at the age of a few months, and a little girl, the future duchess of berry. The present portrait is part of a series of paintings created by joseph hickel, court painter in vienna, who in 1768 was commissioned by maria theresa to go to italy to paint portraits of the nobility of milan, parma and florence. The paintings from caserta depicting the infants of the royal house of habsburg (they still retain the original frames, with small gold leaves), were probably sent to queen maria carolina, aunt and mother-in-law of maria clementina" [1].
