Portrait of george brooke, 9th baron cobham. Oil on panel, diameter 32 cm, private collection. The drawing is closely based on holbein's drawing of cobham. The background was originally blue, but the smalt pigment has discoloured (hearn, 44). George brooke, 9th baron cobham (c. 1497–1558), was knighted after the fall of morlaix in 1523 and succeeded to his baronage in 1529. He took part in the trial of anne boleyn in 1536 and in the scottish campaigns in 1546. He was linked with wyatt's rebellion in 1554 but pardoned. Date: after 1544.
