Agnus Dei, Francisco de Zurbarán, between 1635 and 1640

Agnus Dei, Francisco de Zurbarán, between 1635 and 1640

A dark background and a gray table is the setting where the unique motif of the painting is displayed: a merino lamb between eight and twelve months old. He is still alive, lying down and with his legs tied with a cord, in an unmistakably sacrificial attitude, which curiously recalls famous images of martyred saints, such as the moving sculpture of saint cecilia by stefano maderno in the basilica of saint cecilia in rome. The painter has used his unmatched ability to reproduce textures, a very calculated and directed light that creates large spaces of shadows and a meticulous technique, to concentrate attention on the animal that seems to meekly assume its fatal destiny (text extracted from portús, j. : el prado in the ermitage, museo nacional del prado, 2011, pp. 130-131). Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: between 1635 and 1640. Place of creation: Spain. Dimensions: height: 37.3 cm (14.6 in); width: 62 cm (24.4 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Museo del Prado. Agnus Dei, por Francisco de Zurbarán
