Two men, wearing patched and ragged clothes, stand together. One (left) stands full-face, arms folded, shoulders hunched, staring to the right with fierce despair. From his pocket issues a bulky document: 'by law i'm ruin'd quite'. The other (right) stands in profile to the left, his left hand in his coat-pocket from which hang papers inscribed: 'spent all my money & lost my cause'; 'mortgage'; 'officer's fees'. He looks down with an expression of angry melancholy. 6 november 1796
