The work represents the martyrdom of saint meliton and the forty martyrs of sebaste of the legio xii fulminata, who according to tradition were condemned to be exposed naked during the night on a frozen lagoon near sebaste. This work is a preparatory sketch for the painting painted by mariano salvador maella for the main altarpiece of the church of the convent of santi quaranta martiri in rome. In 1762 the royal academy of fine arts of san fernando, on behalf of the franciscan religious of rome, commissioned maella to create the painting, which was painted during the painter's stay in rome.
