The philosopher rat. Caricature. Vignette, a church rat with clogs and holding a bottle brush sits at the foot of a pillar where a poster adorned with a cross and a crest is posted. Next to the rat, a candle holder and at its feet a tombstone on which we read: “cygit”. Historical commentary: this print illustrates the philosopher's rat, or long live the hen, even though she has the chirp, by edmond lemoine, taken from scenes from the private and public lives of animals. Drawings by grandville (1840-1842). It seems that the drawings in the first volume date from 1841 and those in the second volume from 1842 (see exhibition catalog "grandville original drawings", 1986-1987).
