I. -y. Mettenleiter peasants and a pie seller second half of the 1780s. Russian museum copper, oil. 41 x 31 left in the center: jacob mettenleiter. R. Received in 1928 from the state museum of fine arts, leningrad zh-3212 having arrived in russia at the age of 36, the german artist johann mettenleiter remained here until the end of his life. A court painter to emperor paul, who took part in the decoration of the royal residences, mettenleiter did not abandon genre painting. Impressions of russian life became the basis of his paintings, one of which is “peasants and a pie seller”. The participants in the genre scene are serious and focused. The attentive eye of the painter notes the difference between the appearance of a bearded russian peasant in a sheepskin coat and a long-haired melancholic chukhonets (chukhonets is the popular name for the karelo-finnish population of the environs of st. Petersburg) in a hat, with a neat tub. With a careful brush, the master depicts the weaving of bast shoes, footcloths, the fur on the coat and even the fish baked in an open pie. Date: Second half of the 1780s.
