Allegorical figure known as "la belle simonetta"
work by alessandro filipepi known as boticelli (around 1445-1510)
around 1485
tempera and oil on poplar wood
frankfurt am main, städel museum
this allegorical figure, designed in the antique style, is inspired by a portrait of simonetta vespucci, one of the most beautiful women of the nobility of florence, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 23. Botticelli depicted her in several of his major works, including the birth of venus but also in virgins and child. In this painting, she wears a jewel around her neck inspired by an ancient greek carnelian by the sculptor dioskourides, called the “seal of nero”. This jewel painted by botticelli in the form of a cameo represents apollo and his lyre, the satyr marsyas who dared to challenge him during a music competition and his son olympus. Fr. Wikipedia. the jacquemart-andré museum celebrates the creative genius of sandro botticelli (1445 – 1510) and the activity of his workshop, by exhibiting around forty works by this refined painter accompanied by some paintings by his florentine contemporaries on whom botticelli had a particular influence. The career of botticelli, who became one of the greatest artists in florence, bears witness to the influence and profound changes that transformed the city under the medicis.
