iconographic description:
in a living room with 18th century decoration, two men are seated at a table. The one on the left, older and wearing glasses, is holding an open book and looking at his companion, younger, who has his eyes turned towards the papers he is holding in his hand. It is about a student and his tutor. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "his governor, one of the most beautiful characters of that time, monsieur de cypierre, remained behind him like a panoply. Amyot, in a simple abbot's cassock, also accompanied the prince, he was already his tutor as he was also that of the three other princes whose affection became so profitable to him.
