iconographic description:
the tail of the salmon passage theater. Current rue bachaumont, 2nd arrondissement. Charge. Show. Characters with animal heads. Characters on balconies, lantern, “ticket prices” displays; "lucrezia borgia, v. Hugo". ,
historical commentary:
composition inspired by aubert's "petite macédoine, nº 105" (pen lithograph from 1832 by granville and forest: bnf, inv dc 199 d, t. Iii). The three characters grouped together on the left refer to: "tamerlane of the constitutional" as well as the "noble carolina parakeet and [the] legitimist green canary at bay". The queue at the theater takes up the motif of the last subject "climb on my knee, not bourgeois, for ten sous you will gain twelve places in the queue. . . " (cf. Cat of the exhibition "granville", carnavalet, 1988, p 26)
