iconographic description:
genre scene. Exterior scene: street, louvre, quai de l'ecole. Characters: a crowd made up of men, women and children is gathered around an acrobat. He brandishes a wand and at his feet are a basket, two cups and dice, sealed letters, a cup containing a few coins, a drum and a trumpet as well as a wooden circle mounted on a stem on which other sealed letters are stuck. A woman from the audience reads one of these letters. Among the crowd, we recognize a cheese seller. A clergyman turns his back on the scene and is busy reading one of the books presented before him. In the distance, three men climbed onto a roof. In the front row, young chimney sweep with a cap and knee pads. Mode of acquisition: purchase
