Gerhardus Fabius (1806-1888), Johan Heinrich Neuman, 1864

G. Fabius depicted in the uniform of vice-admiral of the dutch navy. Between 1853 and 1856, he was posted in japan three times. There he taught navigation techniques to japanese naval students and used the paddle steamer soembing, a gift from the dutch, for the practical lessons. Many of his students later held high positions in the japanese navy. As token of appreciation, the japanese government presented him with two swords in 1854. This was quite unusual, as only samurai (members of the military nobility) were allowed to carry swords. After a long career in the navy, he was finally promoted to vice-admiral in 1867. In the period 1873-1877, he was a member of the dutch house of representatives. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: 1864. Place of creation: Nederland. Dimensions: height: 75 cm (29.5 in); width: 61 cm (24 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Depicted People: Gerhardus Fabius. Collection: Netherlands Institute for Art History.
